Reading Buddies

Sign-up from June 3 through June 28
Buddies meet on July 8, 15 & 22 from 4-5 p.m.

Teens (Big Buddies) will meet with elementary-aged kids (Little Buddies) to share books and encourage a love of reading.

Little Buddies are elementary students who are learning to read independently and who want to get some extra practice with a fun reading partner.

Big Buddies are middle and high school students entering grades 6-12 who like to hang out with younger children and want to encourage a love of reading. There will be an orientation session for Big Buddies on July 8 at 3:30, before your Little Buddies join you at 4 p.m.

You’ll meet at the library on Monday, July 8, 15 & 22 from 4-5 p.m. to read and do other fun activities together.

Clinton Reading Challenge

And, we’re off! After just one week of reading, newcomer Clinton, Iowa has taken the lead with 515 hours! New York is in second place with 364, followed by Clinton County, Penn. with 138. Still at the starting line are New Jersey with 47 and Massachusetts with 21. You can help us on our quest to be the most-read Clinton by joining our team.

All you have to do is keep track of how long you spend reading each week. You can read books, magazines, or newspapers, listen to an audiobook, or anything you can borrow from the library. It counts! Click here to download a Clinton Challenge Reading Log, grab a paper copy from inside the library, or use your own method.

Every Friday from May 31 through September 6, let us know how long you’ve read during the week. You can snip this week from your reading log and drop it off, email your total to clinton@midyork.org, or fill out this online form. We’ll tally the hours and see how we stack up against the competition. Every week that you submit your time, you’ll be entered in a raffle to win a fun prize at the end of the summer.

Check back for updates throughout the summer. Thanks for joining our team and helping us show the country that this Clinton loves to read!

Temporary Change In Book Donations

Thanks to the generosity of people donating their books this year, our Friends Committee members have been moving A LOT of books. Please observe this temporary procedure, which will be in place until we stop accepting donations on June 30.

If you are a Town of Kirkland resident, they will happily accept donations of your “like new,” in sellable condition books, DVDs, and CDs.

If you don’t live in Kirkland, you must have a Mid York Library System card and have the Kirkland Town Library as your home library. They will happily accept your items with a $10 donation to offset our costs.

Book donations will only be accepted when the library is open. Donations should be in sturdy bags or boxes that weigh 30 lbs. or less.

When you come, please stop in at the front desk to gain access to the donation shed. Any items left outside or on the library’s back porch cause a huge headache for staff. They will either be returned to you or immediately thrown away. Please note that staff are not able to help with any unloading/carrying of donation boxes.

Thank you for your understanding as we sort and organize the donations for the sale on July 12, 13 & 14.

One School, One Book

Our friends at Clinton Elementary School are all reading Katherine Applegate’s “The One and Only Ivan” from May 17 through June 13. Let’s read along with them! Stop by the KTL to pick up a copy of the book. When you’re done, share a message with students on a big sign.
